Founded in 1958 with the support of UNESCO, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) holds the distinction of being the first public engineering institution in India.
In recognition of its exceptional contributions to higher education, IIT Bombay was designated as an Institute of National Importance by the Indian Parliament in 1961. It also enjoys the status of a ‘Deemed University,’ granting it substantial autonomy.
IIT Bombay consistently ranks among the top educational institutions in India and internationally. In the 2023 National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), it was placed 3rd in the Engineering category. India Today also recognized IIT Bombay as the 2nd best engineering institution in the country and 2nd best engineering (government) institution.
